The Three A's

October 3, 2005

Lately, I’ve let the three A’s slip in my relationships. I’m very disappointed in myself because of this.

The first A is appreciation. I appreciate my friends, and I think I succeed at showing my appreciation. I think. I appreciate them for their kindness, generosity, sensitivity, and intellect. I appreciate the attention they give me when I’m sure it would be easier for them to walk away.

The second A is admiration. I admire my friends for who they are. I think I’m less successful showing my admiration. I admire them for their leadership, humor, strength and uniqueness. Honestly… I have the most admirable friends. I am so blessed.

The third A is acceptance. This is where I fail in a big way. I need to learn not to expect my friends to be someone they’re not… learn not to expect them to be like me. I need to remember why I wanted them for friends to begin with… many times, the very things I am resistant to accept later in a relationship are the very things for which I admired them from the start.

I think that it would help if I read Flashgirl’s Be Impeccable entries every so often.

I resolve to do better with this. My friends deserve it. I would even seek professional help if I can’t figure out how to do this by myself. My friends are that important to me.

100s of LPs to MP3

September 8, 2005

I have 100s of LPs that I collected when I was a teenager and into my 20s. I want to digitize them and get rid of my turntable. Then I could get a smaller stereo system to replace the behemoth I have now. Not to mention reclaiming the space the LPs take up.

This is a major project, though. I don't have all my CDs ripped to MP3 yet. I probably need to finish that first and several other of my 43 Things.

On a slightly unrelated note... What was the first CD you bought?

I think my first CD was Boston's Boston because I thought it would sound awesome on CD. Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was an early CD purchase, too.

Free Cereal and Free Milk

September 3, 2005

Today, I used my free milk and cereal coupon at Central Market. These are things I buy every week, so it worked out great. I bought Central Market Organics Toasty O's. They have an ingredient that's not on my diet (sugar), but I'm hoping it's not enough sugar to screw me up. I'll go back to eating Barbara's Breakfast O's when those are gone. I also bought:

  • Starfruit (never tried it before)

  • Kiwis

  • Raspberries

  • Cantaloupe

  • Lettuce

  • Tomatoes

  • Cauliflower

  • Southwest Marinated Pork Loin

  • Hamburger Patties mixed with Hatch Peppers

  • Salmon

  • Grilled Veggies (eggplant, squash, zucchini, onion, asparagus)

It’s all good!! happy

I saw a few meteors

August 13, 2005

I went out about 12:30 a.m. and sat in my lawn chair. About 1:00 a.m., I was tired of craning my neck, so I went back in and brought out a comforter and two pillows. I watched the sky for a while, made some wishes and fell asleep under the stars.

At one point, there were two cloud masses. One looked like a bunny. The other looked like a ghost hand making a shadow puppet of a bunny. They were almost touching noses. It was surreal.

Preparation for the Perseids

August 12, 2005

When I get home from work tonight, I need to evict the spiders from the lawn chair in the backyard. I want a clean place to sit to watch the Perseid Meteor shower. Last time I saw meteors, it was purely accidental. Lily dawg got me up to go outside to pee pee (her, not me), and I just happened to look up as a meteor shot through the sky.

Are meteors considered shooting stars? I have some wishes I’d like to make. smile

Free Coffee

July 15, 2005

I took the day off work today for no particular reason. I headed over to Central Market thinking it would be less crowded than it is on weekends. It was less crowded, but the whole time it still seemed like someone was in my way or I was in someone else’s way. I got through it, though, and used the ”$10 off bulk coffee or any other bulk item of my choice” coupon. Some of the items I bought:

  • Moka Java Decaf Coffee
  • Kavli Thick Crispbread
  • Walla Walla Onions
  • Dried Fruits (pineapple, raspberry, apricot)
  • Red Raspberries
  • Tomatoes on the Vine
  • Rotary Cheese Grater
  • Chicken Breasts, Pork Cutlets and Bacon

$10 Off Steak

June 18, 2005

Oh boy… Central Market is sure proud of their T-Bones. I shouldn’t have bought T-Bones as they were incredibly expensive, but they are my favorite steak and everything happened so fast.

Me: I’d like two T-Bones.
Him: [grab, weigh, wrap] Here you go.
Me: [looking at the price] GASP!

That’s okay… I got $10 off, and I need to live a little sometimes.

I also bought cantaloupe slices, a cored pineapple, a yellow bell pepper, some lettuce, and a lindeman’s framboise lambic beer.

Ups and Downs in the Texas Legislature

May 25, 2005

Listening to the Legislative Committee hearings this year was neat. The bill that requires the web sites I develop to be accessible to state employees with disabilities passed, and that makes me very happy.

The disheartening thing about this session, though, is that the proposed amendment to the Texas Constitution to ban gay marriage passed. It will go to voters in November. There’s already a law that bans gay marriage; they just want to get it into the Constitution to make damned sure no court overturns that law.

There were many more witness against the bill than for it, but, sadly, it passed anyway. What’s the use of witnesses if they aren’t going to influence the outcome? See what I mean:

I fear there are too many closed-minded people in Texas for it to not pass in November. Even people I respect a lot who I don’t consider closed-minded say they will vote for the amendment because they simply don’t want to change the definition of marriage. No good reason why… they just say they don’t want to change the definition. I still don’t get it.

Anyway… it was great to listen to the legislative process. I’ll definitely listen again next biennium.

This morning, I headed out with a 50% off coupon for up to 2 dozen donuts from Round Rock donuts. On the back, it said there was a Round Rock donut shop not too far from my house. But it wasn’t there. frown There was a restaurant at that address. It could be they had Round Rock donuts inside, but I didn’t want to walk in and have to walk back out if they didn’t.

The other two locations are on the other side of town, and I wasn’t interested in that big of an adventure on a rainy Sunday morning.

I ended up at Krispy Kreme to at least quench my donut craving. Their donuts are far inferior to Round Rock donuts, though. I had a hot-off-the glazing belt donut, and it was icky. Yech! I like a little more substance to a donut. I ended up getting 3 chocolate covered creme filled and 3 glazed sour cream.

Perhaps the third time I try to use a coupon from this Passbook will be the charm. I’ll keep trying.
