Lunch with the Bomb Squad 2 - On Video

October 30, 2006

Turns out the bomb squad was called out where I ate lunch today because some guy went into a nearby school and was acting weird. The police questioned him, and he left, but he left his car there. There was a briefcase and a duffel bag in the car, and the bomb squad was there to investigate.

I mentioned the robot in my earlier post. It's cool!! I found a video from a newscast online where you can see the robot at work and a man in a funny suit. I'm not sure how long it'll be available. I think it's worth sitting through the short commercial at the beginning. Oh... and the reporter? She's standing right where my car was! heh

Lunch with the Bomb Squad

October 30, 2006

Lunch at the Galaxy Cafe was exciting today. The bomb squad and haz mat team were there.

Haz Mat and Bomb Squad Trucks

They even had a robot on wheels.

I'll have to watch the news tonight to learn more about what was going on. I haven't heard an explosion, so hopefully all is well.

Yay! Voting!

October 25, 2006

I just voted early. It's weird to be able to vote for someone to be the boss of where I work. It's even weirder that everyone else in the state, no matter where they work, can vote for my new big boss.

I haven't said anything about the election on my blog. It's tricky. Current big boss is running for governor. One of the candidates for future big boss has criticized current big boss. That candidate is also, reportedly, close with current big boss' opponent.

So enough about people. I voted for Austin to build a new central library. That'll rock if it passes!

Dream Journal - Cats

October 21, 2006

There were lots of cats in my house. My cats were there, but there were others. After a while, I realized some were small tigers. Then I noticed some small lions. I looked at my bedroom window and saw there was a hole where they were getting in. My bed was moved under that window in this part of the dream.

I thought I'd better call the police since there were lions and tigers. I couldn't remember the phone number, though, for non-emergencies. I was trying to find it on the internet. Then there were some men outside, so I asked them if they would help me get the cats out. I'm not sure if they did.

What Am I Searching?

October 12, 2006

Lately, I've noticed something about search boxes on web sites. I go to the search box on a site, and instead of searching the site, it searches the whole internet. Then I have to go back to the site to click a radio button to choose the option to search the site instead. CNN is an example.

What are they thinking?

My suspicion is that most people don't really know they're searching the whole web. Who looks at URLs besides geeky weirdos like me?

An even more aggravating problem I've encountered is with PDF files. I opened a PDF file today and wanted to search it. So I clicked the button in the menu bar with the pair of binoculars. The panel that opened said, "Search PDF" and "What word or phrase would you like to search for?" I entered the words and didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to the words on the button: "Search the Internet." It opened a browser window and gave me a Yahoo search results page for the whole freakin' internet.

I guess they get money from Yahoo or Google or another search engine to trick people into searching the internet. It's annoying.

Smoking Ban Revisited

October 5, 2006

A federal judge ruled that some of the language in Austin's smoking ban is constitutionally vague, so he overturned that part of the ban. It boils down to this: Bar owners used to be required to tell smoking customers that they can't smoke and refuse to serve them if they did. Now, the only things bar owners have to do is put up "No Smoking" signs and not put out ashtrays.

The weird thing is, people are acting like the whole law was overturned. It's still against the law for people to smoke in bars. It doesn't change the fact that the majority of Austin voters decided that it should be against the law. Yet now that bar owners aren't required to make them stop, smokers are considering it a victory.

I'll say it again: It's still against the law for people to smoke in bars. Sheesh.

October 3, 2006

  • Today would be my Mom's 75th birthday. She died 12 years ago.
  • Shelly at work is going to have a baby.
  • I took Lily to the vet for a dental cleaning. They found a tumor on her leg, removed it and sent it to pathology. I'll find out in about a week if it's malignant.
  • Rob and Deborah at work got married.
  • On the way home from the vet (with Lily in the car), I had a flat tire and had to change it.
  • Donna at work has a new grandbaby.
  • Lily also had a cracked tooth that had to be removed. The vet bill was 4 times more than I was expecting because of all the extra stuff they had to do.
  • I only have a temporary spare tire, so I'll have to deal with that tomorrow. Luckily, I'd already scheduled off to watch over Lily.
  • I'm so hungry. I put a frozen dinner in the microwave. It's beeping now.

Paige from Starbucks

October 2, 2006

Paige smiles, takes my money and asks me how my weekend was at Starbucks. She also has an art car. I picked up a postcard this morning that says she'll have a showing of her Accidental Altars at the Green Muse Cafe during "First Thursday" this month (October 5) at 510 W. Oltorf (near S. 1st). Neat!
