Just some stuff - LwB, Jobs, NaSoAlMo, Coffee Bean and Pomplamoose

September 30, 2009

A quick update for youz guyz:

  • When I muster up the energy to write, I usually write on the Lunch with Brian blog. Today, I wrote up the visit to Perry's Steakhouse we made earlier this month.
  • I've changed jobs again. I'm back to doing what I did around 2002... Java programming and general techie data type support. It's a lot less stressful, and I'm sleeping much better at night.
  • National Solo Album Month (NaSoAlMo) is just a month away. I'm already getting excited about writing and recording another album!
  • I haven't been to Starbucks in a couple of weeks. *GASP!* It's because I started going to The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. I prefer Starbucks mochas, but the pastries and iced teas at Coffee Bean are far superior. Chocolate chip scones, chocolate croissants and Round Rock donuts plus teas like Japanese cherry, apple roiboos and 10 gallon black. Great way to start the morning!
  • A new favorite band is Pomplamoose. They do fun video songs on YouTube. Today's video includes a puppet playing the kick drum on Earth, Wind and Fire's September. They also have a fun cover of Beyonce's Single Ladies that's been making the rounds on the interwebs.
  • Next up? October!

Just Some Stuff

April 11, 2009

  • I got a tiny tree a couple of weeks ago. It started as a stick with roots, but shortly after I planted it in a pot on my back porch, the leaves started sprouting. It was a real joy to see the progress every day. One evening this week, I watered the little tree and marveled out how much growth it had. The next morning, all the leaves were gone. My best guess is that something ate them. It really took the wind out of my sails that day, and I'm not sure that I've recovered. I don't know why it affected me so much.
  • My out of the house adventure today will include Waterloo Ice House for chicken fried steak and eggs, and Target for toilet paper and Lipton onion soup mix.
  • I watched the pilot of The Unusuals. Amber Tamblyn and Adam Goldberg attracted me to it. It's quirky and looks like it has a lot of potential.
  • I wish networks would stagger the television season. There are months when there's nothing new on. And then months when I can't keep up.
  • It wouldn't be April in America without taxes and my song Tax Lady Blues.

Just Some Stuff

April 3, 2009

  • One of my favorite TV shows was "Cupid" with Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall. It was canceled the first season and was named by E! Online as #4 in the top 10 shows canceled before their time (My So-Called Life was #1). Now they've revived it with different actors. I watched the first half hour and decided I wasn't going to keep watching. Then I kept watching and now I guess I'm sucked in. Bobby Cannavale is no Jeremy Piven, but maybe he'll grow on me.
  • No, I'm not on Myspace.
  • iTunes changed the name of Party Shuffle to iTunes DJ. I like Party Shuffle better.
  • I paid off my student loans!
  • Now I want a Wii Fit.
  • Or an iPhone.

Just Some Stuff

December 21, 2008

  • First day of winter. That means the days start getting longer, right? So in six months, I can get up when it's light and leave work when it's still light? I can't wait.
  • I'm eating bread and butter pickles and drinking spiced tea for supper. Buckeyes and white-chocolate peppermint snowmen for dessert. Maybe some dobosh torte later, too. Ah, Christmastime.
  • I watched some movies this weekend and aborted some, too. I aborted Just Friends which I had forgotten I'd aborted before. I also aborted Dream Girls. As much as I love Jennifer Hudson, I can't stand people bursting into song in lieu of a spoken conversation. The movies I got through were The Human Stain and Knocked Up. The former was one of those indie movies I'm glad I watched but don't care to see again. The latter was one I probably could have lived without, but seeing three freaks from "Freaks and Geeks" in the same movie was fun. I sure like Seth Rogan.
  • The spiced tea I'm drinking was concocted by a coworker. I think I know which coworker, but I'm not totally sure. We put stockings up on our cubicles Dec. 1, and the coworkers have been sneaking things into them. The spiced tea was a small tupperware-like container containing sugar and spice and lotsa of stuff nice that dissolves in water to make a tasty warm beverage.
  • I only have a day and a half left of work before Christmas. I hope it's quiet, and I can catch up on some things. Like organizing my e-mail. It's a disaster. I need to write some procedures, too. Normally, that would be a yucky job, but finding some quiet time to sit and think and write procedures sounds like a dream.

Just some more stuff

September 3, 2008

  • One of my favorite authors, Robert Jordan, died a while back. He was the fantasy author who wrote The Wheel of Time series (or most of it). He collected swords and knives and fantasy type weapons. Some of his collection is available on eBay.
  • Crabapple Lane Rob is back to bloggin after Gustav. Seems like the worst that happened is he lost his internet.
  • The Ridin' Gustav blogger is back, too. He says that while Gustav wasn't as hard on New Orleans as Katrina in terms of surge and rain, it was harder on the power supply due to the wind.
  • I'm feeling better mentally today than I did over the weekend. Maybe it was mostly PMS.
  • I'm going to the doctor tomorrow morning to see what she says about the dull pain in my hip. I hope it's something minor. My friend Ann at work is having back trouble, and her doctor told her it's her muscles tightening up around a strain. The strain can't heal until the muscles relax, and the muscles can't relax because of the strain. So she got some drugs to help with that.

Just some stuff

August 31, 2008

  • My friend Rob is going to ride out Hurricane Gustav at Crabapple Lane. He's about 50 miles north of New Orleans. Sending good luck wishes and prayers.
  • I've been watching my Deluxe Edition Black Hawk Down DVD. I saw the movie once before, but couldn't tie it all together. This time, I watched it twice. Once without commentary, and once with commentary from some guys who were there. Then I watched History Channel and PBS documentaries about the mission in Somalia. Those guys were brave. It's one thing to go in, not know what to expect and get out. But to go back in again? I know I couldn't do it.
  • It's a three day weekend, and I should be feeling on top of the world. Instead, I'm just sleeping, eating and crying mostly. I guess I'm okay as long as I still want to eat since that's my favorite thing to do in the world. The problem is trying to adjust to changes at work with a bit of PMS thrown in. At least, I hope there's some PMS thrown in. I hate to think what I'll feel like when that kicks in if it's not here already. Not sure if I'm going to be able to adjust to the changes at work. I need to internalize the fact that I'm not the boss of me anymore. That's a tough adjustment to make.
  • On a positive note, I got my domain name problems worked out. I transferred the one that's expiring to Domain Direct. I hope they're good people. I'm not impressed with NetNameOne's or Tucows' customer service. They treat everyone like they're domain name process experts. I'm not. If I was, I wouldn't need help. Still waiting to see if the refund NetNameOne said they credited to my credit card shows up.
  • I think I'll head out for some lunch. Then I should probably mow and trim the lawn this afternoon. Maybe food and hard work will snap me out of this low.

Gladiators, socializing and my back

August 5, 2008

  • My coworker's daughter Ally won American Gladiators last night! I saw her dad in the audience cheering like crazy. They shot the show back in May, so he had to keep the results a secret all this time.
  • I was supposed to go to a happy hour/dinner thing tonight, but I wasn't feeling good. The truth is, I never feel like going to things like that after work. I just want to come home and relax and have some time to myself. I feel bad, though, because I told the lady who invited me that I'd come. I wasn't true to my word.
  • My back has been bothering me. It hurts sometimes, but mostly it just feels like something is out of place right above my right hip. It's sore when I stretch it, and sometimes something pops in or out of place. Tonight, the muscles around that hip are tight, and I can't relax them. I ordered some Yoga for back DVDs. I hope that helps.

Salads, Ripley and American Gladiators

July 26, 2008

American Gladiator Contestant Ally Davidson

  • I saw a Jack in the Box truck that said, "Forget diamonds. Salads are a girl's best friend." I guess they were advertising their salads, but I was offended by the statement. Maybe salad is a weight-obsessed girl's best friend. Salad is certainly not my best friend. But then, neither are diamonds. I can't really pick a best inanimate friend.

  • The vet finally called me back about Ripley's urinalysis results. He couldn't pinpoint why Rip's bladder got blocked last week, so he couldn't recommend a way to prevent it. I don't like that answer. Surely there's something I can do. When I pumped him a bit, he did say canned cat food would be better than dry to help keep him hydrated. So I'll try that. Internet research said canned was better, too. It's a little more trouble, but both Rip and Orion will like the treat.

  • My coworker's daughter and her newlywed husband are in the semifinals of American Gladiator. Ally competed last Monday, and she kicked butt! Her husband Jeff will be competing this Monday, I believe. They call her the "runaway bride" because she tried out for the show on her wedding day. She currently holds the woman's record for the fastest time on The Eliminator obstacle course that they do at the end of the show. Go Ally!!

  • What's Mr. Donahue getting at with this cherry pie tweet. Is it something naughty? If the answer is yes, I'm okay with not knowing the details.

With the image of Ally in this entry, it kinda looks like one of Muckdog's blog entries.

New Skin, Vacation Pictures, Starbucks, MT, and Cell Phone Stuff

July 6, 2008

  • I created a new skin for my Web site. It will forever be called the "Hotel Grim skim" due to a typo that stuck. It's based on the Hotel Grim in Texarkana which fascinated me on my recent trip there. My BFF Shann suggested I make it and use a grayscale scheme. I spent most of the day yesterday working on it. Creating a skin always takes far longer than I anticipate. This one did because I've never used a graphic background before and had to make sure all the words on all the pages had a solid background to be readable. More pictures of the hotel will be available when I get my vacation pictures done.
  • Speaking of vacation pictures, that's what I worked on all day Friday. There's still a lot more to do, but it's begun!
  • My biggest complaint about Starbucks (which is only a small one, really, since I'm completely addicted to the place) has been that they don't offer free wi-fi. Now they've come up with a deal with ATT to give registered Starbucks card users one session of up to 2 hours of free wi-fi per day. I went to Starbucks today to see if it works, and it does. Yay!
  • For Movabletype Geeks: This morning, I spent a while clearing out my Movabletype activity log and MT Blacklist databases. They had gotten so large from comment spam attacks that I was getting a server error when I tried to view them. I had to go into the actual database and delete records. The good news is that the spam attack defenses I have in place work so well that I wasn't even aware they were happening (that's why the log got so large). Just since I cleared the logs this morning, I've gotten 7-14 spam hits per hour. I think I probably need to close comments on my old blogs and change the URL for making comments. That'll fool them for a while.
  • More for Movabletype Geeks: I'm still using MT 3.16. I hate upgrading. I'm starting to be afraid that something will break, though, and I won't be able to get any support.
  • I tried two cell phone related services this weekend. YouMail and TreasureMyText. Both look cool. Neither work with my phone. I is very disappointed. But I'm not going to spend more money on a phone just to use those services.

Hi, It's been a while

May 10, 2008

  • My air conditioner is dead. The home warranty is supposed to cover replacement, but I'm still waiting to hear. I thought being without air conditioning would be a lot worse. I'm hot, but it's bothering Lily dawg more than me. She woke me up with her panting a few times last night.
  • I was poking around my Web hosting company's Web site, and I saw that they've changed their array of services. They're offering a lot more functionality to new customers for the amount that I'm paying. I asked if they would upgrade me, and they did. I have unlimited bandwidth now! And I can have up to 30 different Web sites on one account. Not that I could keep up with 30 different Web sites, but I could have them if I wanted!
  • I'm working on one new Web site now. That's all I have to say about that.
  • It's hard to do housework when there's no air conditioning. Once you work up a sweat, you don't lose it. I guess I could drive around... my car has great air conditioning.
  • I went to Madam Mam's for lunch. I had a dish with crunchy green beans, chicken, shredded coconut and peanuts with coconut cream on top. It was surrounded by sliced boiled egg and sitting in some lime and thai pepper sauce. I think it also had crack in it because I want to go back for more now.

Just Some Stuff - Safety Deposit Box, House and the 4th of July

July 4, 2007

  • I feel all growed up today. I rented a safety deposit box and put valuable jewelry and papers in there.
  • I also moved things into my new house. Did I forget to mention that I bought a house? Yippee!
  • My new house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two car garage, and a master bathroom sink that looks like a bowl sitting on the countertop.
  • I took my little Papoose guitar over there and walked through the rooms playing and singing. I thought filling the place with music would be a good start to my new life there.
  • I hope everyone has a rockin' 4th of July.

I Jinxed Gina, Juggled and Jet Skiied

April 4, 2007

  • American Idol: Sorry, Gina Glocksen. I didn't mean to jinx you by posting about you last night. Haley should have gone home. I guess legs get more votes than smiles. Not from me. I like a great smile over legs any day.
  • I'm participating in the Texas Roundup. Participants log minutes of exercise or other activities. Usually, I log 20 to 60 minutes of walking per day. It's also set up to log juggling and house work. I had 5 minutes of juggling today.
  • I didn't really jet ski as the title suggests. I'm just pretending to be more adventurous. I need to learn not to be so stuffy.

Redbud, Lunchtime and Neko Case

March 2, 2007

  • My redbud is beginning to bloom. Spring always gets here faster than I expect, but I'm definitely not complaining.
  • There was no lunchtime mishap yesterday (or today, even). Whew. I feared it would come in threes.
  • Neko Case = fantastic. I'm also enjoying Calexico. I like how they have bloggy websites.

Please may I keep my blogging club card?

August 9, 2006

Just some stuff:

  • I went to Mandola's Italian Kitchen for lunch (first time). I was reading the menu and thought some pesto pasta sounded delicious. Then I thought, "I'd rather get something with meat." I continued to read the menu and finally settled on Eggplant Parmesan. I'm glad no one was holding me accountable for that previous thought about meat. I forgot it about two seconds after I thought it.

  • I recommend the Denver Post's "Lyrics Undercover" podcast. Each one is short (less than 10 minutes), and as the site says, "each week Brian gives us ... a podcast that looks behind the words of well-known songs." You don't have to have an iPod to listen. Just download the MP3 file and listen on your computer if you want.

  • I also recommend the FX series "30 Days." It's from the guy who did Super Size Me. Each show, Morgan Spurlock or someone else spends 30 Days experiencing something new to them. The one I watched last night had a guy who was laid off from his job due to outsourcing to India go to India and get a job. He got to see how the "new" jobs there are affecting the people of India.

Just Some Stuff - Ripley, Big Brother and TV

May 22, 2006

  • Wow... I haven't posted on my blog in so long that all the entries fell off today.
  • I got another cat. His name is Ripley, and he came to live on my porch a while back with the other porch kitties. He got sick a couple weeks ago, so I took him to the vet and claimed him for my own. I'll post a picture of him in the future.
  • That proposition I voted on last week that required the City of Austin to post emails and phone calls between private citizens and council members to the internet in real time didn't pass. Yay!
  • I already miss Elliot from American Idol. I didn't like him much until recently. I sure would have liked to see him and Taylor in the final. I don't really care who would have won, either. I just hope Taylor beats Kathryn.
  • Two hour season finale of 24 tonight. I'll be in front of my TV cheering on Jack and Chloe.

Just Some Stuff including Beth Orton (who knew?)

April 28, 2006

  • I really like Beth Orton. How come I only just discovered her?
  • Two weeks ago on a Friday, I went to the Apple Store to buy a new iPod. I had a $50 off thing from a class action lawsuit about batteries. They told me I'd have to order online to use it. Poop. So I ordered online and got it by Monday. It was even engraved ("Yay! iPod!" what else?). I was terribly impressed. Until the click wheel broke, and I couldn't control it anymore. So I sent it back to Apple, and I'm waiting for them to send me another new one. I'm not impressed anymore.
  • I went to the spa today for a massage, haircut, lunch, manicure and pedicure. It was a great way to spend my birthday.
  • Don't you hate it when public restrooms serve you toilet paper rolls that won't roll? You either get one square at a time, or you have to unwrap the paper manually from the roll.
