It's Moving Time

October 13, 2011

I'm moving my website from ssmrocks to kimnovak.me and giving everything a fresh new look. I'm mid move as I write this, so things are broken in both places. In the past, when I've moved websites at work, I've taken pride in moving things without breaking things. But my old ssmrocks site has gotten so big and convoluted that I've talked myself into being okay with breaking things. Much less stress!

If you find that something isn't working correctly here at KimNovak.me -- like you can't leave a comment or the RSS feed is showing garbage in your RSS reader -- let me know.

Disc Golf and the TV Chair

October 14, 2011

At Waterloo Park today, they were having a disc golf tournament. I noticed disc golfers are partial to tie dye shirts. Some of them toted their disc golf equipment around in baby strollers, too.

Something Someone Gave To Me Today

The place that Lily Dawg goes during the day is remodeling and refurnishing. They gave me a chair that I have always admired. Whenever I would see furniture in stores, I would look for one like it.

Now it's mine! (and Mr. Orion's)

Looks comfortable.

The blog looks great, K.

Does Mr Orion stay there is you sit down?

Tried to login and comment but got a "permission denied" message.

If you sit down ... if, if. Darn typo. smile

Logged in now. Lessee.

Works good.

More of the Fence Fell Down

October 18, 2011

Last February, a section of my fence fell down. Since then, three more sections of my fence fell down, including one section today. I've tried to block the holes with a makeshift garden fence just to keep Lily in, but it's like herding cats. So tomorrow, I think I'll call a fence company.

Two Vocals in One Day

October 22, 2011

In what could be considered a practice run for NaSoAlMo (National Solo Album Month), I recorded vocals for two songs today. One for a new Raspberry Silk album and one for my friend Frank in Seattle. It's so nice to be able to just sing and send tracks off for other people to mix. I think the mixing is what makes NaSoAlMo a pain in the neck. Speaking of... 10 days until NaSoAlMo!

Something I Ate Today

Tom Kha Soup from Madam Mams. It's coconut chicken soup with mushrooms, lime juice, peppers, cilantro and other Asian stuff.

You lost me at coconut but you did it in style by adding cilantro, too. smile

Paleo Diet

October 28, 2011

For over a month, I've been eating a paleo diet. The paleo diet is much like a low carb diet, but I like how it's framed. 1) Eat Lots of Plants and Animals. 2) Don't Eat Poisonous Things. That's how Mark Sisson of Mark's Daily Apple describes it. Poisonous things include sugar, grains, processed foods, junk foods, etc. (You might not consider those things poisonous, but the improvement in how I feel when I don't eat them makes me believe they are.)

When I did low carb diets in the past, losing weight was the goal. A side effect was feeling better physically and mentally. This time, feeling better is the goal and losing weight is a welcome side effect. The truth is, I haven't even weighed.

I'm also trying to change my mindset about food. It's fuel, not a treat or comfort. Breakfast used to be a treat for me... a chocolate croissant from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf or a home baked scone. Breakfast was always a challenge when I was on diets before. Now I've worked out a breakfast that is simply part of my morning routine. Get up, take a shower, brush my teeth, eat a boiled egg, go to work. I usually have some fruit or nuts at work if I get hungry between meals.

I feel great!

Pre-NaSoAlMo Thoughts

October 31, 2011

National Solo Album Month (NaSoAlMo) starts in less than 5 hours at which time I hope to be fast asleep in my bed. I keep thinking it starts on Wednesday because that's when my 1.5 week vacation starts. I also keep thinking that my vacation starts tomorrow, which doesn't make any sense.

The name of my NaSoAlMo album this year is "More Than I Can Chew" which is appropriate because I don't plan to do the full 29:09 minutes unless the creativity is effortless (unlikely!).

Things I do plan to do:

  • Learn to use the Toontracks drum program I got for Christmas last year
  • Work on my music website
  • Play my fretless bass
  • Play with the Auto-tune plugin
  • Cook new things like coconut flour tortillas and coconut flour pancakes

Something I Saw on the Way To Work

Occupy Austin at Austin City Hall. It doesn't look like much, but apparently, there were some arrests on Sunday and the City of Austin has asked the protesters to appoint leaders so the city knows who to talk to if they need to negotiate things.
