NaSoAlMo 2011, Day 3

November 3, 2011 | Comments

It's a wonder I got anything done today. I had a terrible night last night--runny nose, hacking cough, hiccups, cramps. And I had to get up at 9:00 a.m. because the fence people came.

Having a new fence and a gate that swings and latches effortlessly is wonderful.

Fence Before and After

Lily was nervous and barked a lot during the fence building, so I just played iPhone games and goofed around on the computer. She crashed when they left. I went to the pet store for kitty litter.

I finally settled in for some lyric writing at 4:00. I sat at the kitchen table where I could gaze upon my new fence while I wrote. At first, I was trying to glean lyrics out of a scene from Grey's Anatomy where Christina tells Hunt a story about how Burke took little pieces from her until she wasn't herself anymore. It's a story I can identify with, but as I tried to write it, I found myself trying to fit her exact words into the song instead of writing my own words inspired by hers.

Then, for whatever reason, a trip I took to Port Aransas while in college came to mind. I spent the night on the beach with college friends and new friends that we met. I remember sitting around a fire. I remember sleeping in a car. I remember waking up and watching the sun rise. These memories were the spark.

Two hours later, I finished the lyrics. Two hours after that, I'd finished recording it and here I sit writing this.

The mix isn't right, but I can call it done. I think this year, I won't fuss with mixes until December. Getting the mix perfect isn't a requirement (just writing and recording), so I shouldn't spend time on that until December.

Something I Wrote Today

Count the Sunrises

A circle in the sand
on a Port Aransas' night
A dark breeze brings a chill
but the fire's warm and bright

Can you count the sunrises
that you've seen from the water?
Will you count any more?
Have you shared the sight
with a stranger who you met last night?
Will you share any more?

In a gazebo looking east
over Corpus Christi Bay
The oil rigs' silhouettes
against white on orange rays

Can you count the sunrises
that you've seen from the water?
Will you count any more?
Have you shared the sight
with a stranger who you met last night?
Will you share any more?
